The SMAL Legal Difference

Marketing Manager turned Lawyer. Melbourne Law School graduate. United Nations Legal Intern. Corporate In-House Lawyer. Friendly, approachable and passionate about helping individuals and small businesses to grow

Hi, I’m Abigail.

Hi, I am Abigail, Principal Lawyer at SMAL Legal. I am the most friendly and approachable lawyer you will ever meet, simply because, I never started out as one.

As an ex-sales and marketing professional turned lawyer, I intend to do things differently, making engaging a lawyer a rewarding and motivating experience.

I started my career in Brand Management working for eight years in some of the largest fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), retail and entertainment organisations in the world such as Procter & Gamble, Coles Group and NINTENDO! My roles focused on building brands, launching exceptional products, executing campaigns, new product development, product ranging into supermarkets and jumping over an astounding amount of regulatory red tape and approvals. I was always getting blocked by lawyers…

I knew there had to be a better way. I saw a need for highly commercial legal professionals to partner with their clients to help them realise their commercial goals whilst complying with their regulatory obligations. I also saw a great opportunity for the law to be a tool to help people- that it could one day change the world.

So, I decided to go to Law School. Not just any law school, but the Chanel handbag, best law school in Australia- the Melbourne Law School where I received my Juris Doctor (JD). While completing my JD I worked two jobs as an advertising account manager and as a retail assistant at Mecca Brands where I realised how much I enjoyed customer service and making meaningful connections with my clients and customers. I then completed an internship with the United Nations Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (UN-MICT) in the Hague, Netherlands prosecuting war criminals from the former Yugoslavia. I settled into a career in Corporate Law, working in house in building and construction- dealing with everything from drafting commercial contracts, working with the fair work commission to find a resolution to a company-initiated lockout to workplace health and safety hazards.

The pull to help individuals and small businesses was never far away. During lockdown I saw many businesses start up as a necessity to respond to our changing conditions – but now that we are reopening, how can I help these businesses scale up to open their own premises or get their products distributed into retailers?

SMAL Legal was born out of a desire to use my entire breadth of experience from sales, marketing, advertising and legal to help individuals and small businesses with their business goals. Proudly Melbournian- I love supporting local and would also love to meet small businesses from all over Australia.  I cannot wait to meet you and to help navigate around the legal and strategic roadblocks that get in your way.
